This is a GEORGIAN PERIOD HOUSE, and a much loved family holiday home. Because families with children book it for seaside holidays, it’s simply furnished with second-hand furniture, which may be cheaply replaced in the event of breakage, bought from the local auctioneers; that way, I can just about break even, and I have to! We do not use a holiday lettings agency, because that would mean that they, rather than we, would decide how the house should be furnished and maintained; we think that such agencies, with their classifications of properties by “facilities”, encourage inappropriate modernisation of attractive interiors of old houses, destroying their character. We prefer to keep this house the way we like it! So our house is neither modernised inside, nor furnished so as to look like a Jane Austen film set, but then those houses of this size, age and location which are “made over” in either way cost over £1,000 per week during the Summer holidays, whereas ours does not! The kitchen contains an old carpented larder, rather than modern cupboards, though it does also contain a new washing-machine, refridgerator and microwave oven. The dining room contains old fitted cupboards and a built-in kitchen dresser, which we use for cutlery and crockery. Most rooms have their original doors. The sitting room contains attractive bow windows. The position is exceptional, one of only a handful of houses in Sidmouth not only by the sea, but without any road intervening between the house and the beach. The forecourt allows several cars to be parked at the premises.
Sleeps up to 8 (a 9th person can sleep on an old put-up settee if necessary!). Situated at the west end of the esplanade, three minutes walk from the cricket ground, putting green, and about 4/5 minutes walk from the shops. At low tide, there is some sand below the house and also a larger stretch on the Western ("Jacob's Ladder") Beach nearby.
